UKATA Asbestos Non-Licensed Operative (exc. Asbestos Awareness) for Groundworkers

Course Objectives:

The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 requires every employer to ensure that adequate information, instruction, and training be given to its employees who are liable to be exposed to asbestos or who supervise such employees.

This course is designed to provide delegates with the theoretical and practical skills required to undertake non-licensable work contained or presumed in soils or below ground.

Delegates will also have theoretical and/or practical knowledge of the safe working methods for non-licensed ACMs, including Notifiable non-licensed works, depending on the scope of works identified in your Training Needs Analysis.

Course Content:

Delegates will have completed the Asbestos Awareness element, as well as a detailed understanding of the Equipment and Method Sheets:

• EM1 – What to do if you uncover or damage materials that may contain asbestos
• EM2 – Training
• EM3 – Building and dismantling a mini-enclosure
• EM4 – Using a Class H vacuum
• EM5 – Wetting asbestos materials
• EM6 – Personal Protective Equipment
• EM7 – Using damp rags to clean surfaces of minor asbestos contamination
• EM8 – Personal decontamination
• EM9 – Disposal of asbestos waste
• EM10 – Statement of cleanliness after textured coating removal
• Asbestos in Soil Origins, including the concept of free fibre contamination
• Typical types of contamination that can be found below ground level
• Different types of works that can be undertaken, including personnel involved namely, machine digging, hand digging, hand packing, and machine driver & banksman requirements
• Isolation of areas, cordoned off areas, contaminated zones, access & egress, and decontamination of machinery
• Instructions on working practices

On successful completion of the course, delegates will be issued with a UKATA Certificate, which is valid for 12 months, after which the UKATA Asbestos Non-Licensed Operative Refresher course can be taken.

Who Should Attend?

Any persons carrying out non-Licensed works with asbestos-containing materials, as laid down in CAR Reg 2012, Reg 3 (2) and as described in JIWG- CAR-SOIL 2016 Watch point 8 and the Flow Chart Figure 2 and Tables 3 & 4. This would normally include, but is not limited to: Site investigation engineers, utilities installation & maintenance engineers, groundworks operatives (including ground drilling and manual excavations), fencing installation, onsite remediation, and waste disposal.
